Hello! My name is Lily. I am an experienced STEM educator with over a decade of teaching and mentoring experiences. I teach at Brown University during the summer and at a regional university during the academic year. I earned my B.A. in Physics with a minor in Economics from Wellesley College and a master's degree in Math for Teaching from Harvard, where I was on the Dean's List. Additionally, I serve as a Harvard admissions interviewer and a judge for ISEF-qualifying science fairs. Having lived and worked in Barcelona, London, Hong Kong, Beijing, and New York, I bring a global perspective to my teaching and can teach in both English and Mandarin.
As a former engineer for an S&P 50 company and a current PhD candidate in applied math, I have hands-on experience building mathematical models and implementing machine learning. I have taught a wide range of subjects, including pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, precalculus, calculus, physics, and Mandarin. I have also taught medical Mandarin to medical students.
My teaching style personalizes according to each student's unique learning interests and abilities to make learning engaging and effective. Together, we can find ways to make the subject more relatable for you, whether you are a drama student, a social studies buff, or a lover of numbers.
For SAT/ACT preparation, I go beyond teaching test-taking strategies. I make connections to students' math, science, English, and history curricula, providing vital context for the test questions. My students frequently report that the test content they learn from me are transferable to their other courses and APs.
Mentoring students for competitions is one of my greatest passions. My students have placed in states, nationals, and international competitions. I prepare them for the American Mathematics Competition (AMC), Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (JSHS), Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF), and Kaggle Competition for data science. When I was a contestant, I had placed fourth at ISEF and ranked top 7% globally at a Kaggle Competition. With my in-depth knowledge of STEM and public speaking, I coach students to present highly technical content with clarity and credibility to judges, professionals, and general audiences.
I hold a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and have taught it for almost two decades to children and adults. Above all, Tae Kwon Do has given me resilience and the ability to bounce back from setbacks. As an educator, I bring this resilience to my students, empowering them to turn setbacks into comebacks.
